In addition to supplying the basic chemical materials for the body, foods also supply a continuous source of energy needed for human life. The amount of energy provided by food is measured in calories. As already discussed, the human body derives its energy from the breakdown of carbohydrates and fats. Carbohydrates and proteins supply approximately four calories per gram, while fats supply approximately nine calories per gram.
