Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) Electromagnetic Fields

Modern society is dependent on electricity, and people who live near electric power lines are being exposed to high and potentially dangerous levels of ELF radiation. In 1989, researchers at John Hopkins University first began classifying the effects of ELF radiation. They found surprisingly high rates of cancer among workers employed in the electrical power industry, especially the cable-splicers for New York Telephone Company. Yet, as Edlin and Golanty detail, these cable splicers were exposed to only about three times the amount of ELF radiation that is found in the average American home. Recent studies in Sweden have proven that direct exposure to electromagnetic fields generated by high voltage power lines causes leukemia in children. As a result, Edlin and Golanty state that the Swedish government now strictly enforces more stringent safety requirements.
