Ma Huang (Ephedra sinica) - Botanical Medicines

Ma Huang ( Ephedra sinica )

Commonly called ephedra in the West, ma huang is now included in many herbal formulas. It has been grown in China for more than 5,000 years and, according to Murray and Pizzorno, has been used to relieve allergies, asthma, hayfever, colds, and inflammatory conditions. The plant contains two primary alkaloids, ephedrine and pseudoephedrine. Ephedrine stimulates the circulatory system, increases cardiac contractions and pumping, and stimulates blood flow to the brain. It has similar effects as adrenaline, although it can be taken orally and is less toxic.

Ephedra's effect diminishes if used over a long period of time due to weakening of the adrenal glands caused by ephedrine. It is therefore often necessary to use ephedra in combination with adrenal gland supportive herbs such as licorice ( Glycyrrhiza glabra ) and Panax ginseng , as well as nutrients that support the adrenal glands such as vitamin C, magnesium, zinc, vitamin B 6 , and pantothenic acid.
