Water Toxins - Strengthening the Immune System

Water Toxins

More than 100 potentially toxic chemicals have been introduced in drinking water supplies in the U.S. Some are compounds that seep into underground water supplies adjacent to industrial complexes or toxic waste dumps. Several are carcinogenic (cancer-causing), including benzene, carbon tetrachloride, dioxin, ethylene dibromide (EDB), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and vinyl chloride. Studies show that children are especially vulnerable to these toxins.

Tap water in some areas of the U.S. may also carry toxins. Ordinary drinking water stored in wells may be contaminated by wastes, pesticides, or other toxins. Well water can leach heavy metals from copper or lead pipes, and drinking water contaminated with these heavy metals can result in mental retardation in children and nervous system disorders. The drinking water of some American cities also contains small amounts of chlorine to control bacteria, which may also be toxic if it exceeds recommended levels. A National Cancer Institute survey cited by Edlin and Golanty showed that in 10 areas of the U.S., regular consumption of chlorinated tap water was responsible for between 12 and 27% of bladder cancers. People who are worried about water contamination should drink only pure spring or filtered water, or buy a water purifier.
