Otosclerosis - Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Disorders
Otosclerosis
Otosclerosis is a hereditary hearing problem that primarily develops in adults. Usually the disorder is caused by an overgrowth of the tiny stirrup-shaped stapes bones in the middle ear. When the bones become overgrown, they impede the conduction of sound signals traveling through the middle ear.
There are no holistic treatments for acute otosclerosis. This hearing problem can often be completely remedied by surgery which removes the excess bone and replaces all or part of the stapes with an artificial part, and often restores complete hearing ability.
